We ran into a bit of trouble when I realized that the set pieces were slightly too big for our transportation vehicle, so we are having to break them down so we can get them to the theater. This is a good lesson for us as the intention is to make the set portable and easy to load-in and load-out.

Lighting: Though we couldn't do much with the set, we did get all our lights hung and focused, in large part due to Sam Schak! our tech for the show.

Sam pointed out that every good theater tech carries around the following essential tools:

wrench

pencil

permanent marker

tape (measuring tape, gaff tape, glow tape)

multi-tool (screwdriver, pocket knife, pliers, scissors)

flashlight

I brought a ton of puppet building tools, but forgot the most important -- the wrench. Luckily I had a vice grip and Sam made do with that. The puppets look great on stage in the lights we hung, and we can't wait to see everything in action tonight at our Tech run through.

Live: And, thanks to Austin YNN, Joel Ausanka and I got the chance early this morning to briefly show off our "Trash" puppets during their LIVE morning show. Unfortunately, there was some breaking news, so the news team had to cut our coverage short. However, we got a bit of exposure and we hope people will see it and be inspired to come see the whole show.Sara Farrhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03976968947703258794noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5200154501703233967.post-69613498168090310142013-07-01T01:41:00.000-07:002013-07-01T01:41:13.035-07:00Meet the Neighbors<span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}" id=".reactRoot[5993361].[1]{comment10151519058762291_26890460}.[1:0].[4:0:1].[3:1].[4:0:1].[1:1].[1:0].[1:0:2]">A big "hip-hip-hooray" and a hearty "THANK YOU" to Jennifer Bateman for her help on our Glen Park Neighbors, and Fairview Citizens. It is journey of trial and error, that leaves a slimy slug trail of failed attempts. It is plastic shavings, sawdust, spilled glue, scraps of wood, bits of foam, lengths of pipe cut too long, or too short, or from the wrong material. It is the remains of a botched attempt to build something, or the implementation of an idea that just didn't work in the physical world. Ideas are great in your head, and they may compute on paper, but until you try it out and put it to a physical test, you won't know if it works.

Without a mentor to guide me, I'm learning through my own mistakes. The entire Puppet Improv Project is exactly that. Saying "yes" to ideas, trying them out, and building on them. Experience tells me that every botched implementation, or idea that falls flat, is leading me towards a lucky strike. So knowing that the only way out of UNknowing is through experimentation, I wade through this creative mess.
The Glorified Sock PuppetHere are some shots of "Alex", the hero of "Trash". He's built using Project Puppet's "Glorified Sock Puppet" pattern. He's smaller than the Forma series puppets (the adults), but he looks great in proportion to them. Elizabeth Buchanan will be voicing and giving life to this cute little guy.
The show is starting to take shape! Pictured below (from left to right) are Carla with Jen, Phil with Chad, Mrs. Green with Joel (Mayor Smiley below them), and Ms. Stephie Great with Elizabeth.
Here is a shot sequence of how we prep the hand with wire so you can bend and pose it. In the first image, we cut the wire to fit the foam glove -- one wire for each finger. We then curl the ends so they don't poke through the ends of the finger (ouch!). Next we curl and interlock the ends that come together. This forms the base of the hand and keeps the finger wires from sliding around too much. Not shown is the arm rod. To seat this into the palm, we insert 2 palm sized pieces of fun foam that sandwich both the finger wires and a control rod for the arm. Last photo is of my kitchen table during this final puppet building phase -- a lovely, creative mess of wire, rods, foam, bits of fabric and fur, tools, and the original sketch.

Once the base puppets are finished, its time to customize each one with facial features -- hair, eyes, noses, lips and/or teeth. We use "wig tape" to tape down the hair/features first. This lets us try out the type, size, and position of the facial features before committing to gluing them down. I'm noticiing that Officer Phil's pupils are a little off. They actually should be crossed a little, but I'll probably go back and line them up better. Next... costumes!!
Seven (7) are human looking characters. For these we are using Project Puppet's "Forma" pattern series, and their "Glorified Sock" pattern. For the "Neighbors", we will be using TP rolls and creating several rod puppets, hopefully that can either be operated as one unit, or separately. For the "Heap", we will be using a "hoop-skirt" type of design (design posted in earlier blog post [here] )
Challenge?? We want it to be BIG and able to GROW BIGGER, yet only require one (1) puppeteer to manipulate it.

Solutions? Height gained with internal, bendable spinal support. And when we can't make it any bigger, use forced perspective on the set to make everything else feel smaller.

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Sara Farrhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03976968947703258794noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5200154501703233967.post-91258426912709415972013-05-08T17:53:00.000-07:002013-05-08T18:22:48.261-07:00"Trash" Heap -- Construction ResearchHere are some things I'm researching for inspiration on puppet construction of our Trash Heap.
Our objective? Get a sense for how a musical FULL of characters could be handled by just 4 puppeteers -- at least vocally. Thankfully, we can already see that -- though it will be challenging -- we should be able to pull it off!!

AND on top of that, it was amazing hearing the cast bring the story and characters to life. We are trying to create the show to be self-sufficient with just 4 actors, and are designing the lighting and music so it can be run from within the show.

SO! even though we don't have our promo shots ready, we wanted to introduce these fun loving people. We are thrilled and delighted to have
in our cast (pictured below, with place holder puppets): Joel Ausanka, Jennifer Bateman, Elizabeth Buchanan, and Chad Wellington.
This is a
landmark in the PIP's development. Congratulations and a big warm
'thank-you' to my co-writer, Joel Ausanka! It's a fun, sharp story with a delightfully green message. We can't wait to share it with our cast when we have our first "cold read" next week.
Over the past 3 months, the show has metamorphosed into a puppet play with something to say about the future of our own world.

Austin at large is also thinking about the global issue of waste and a lot of great minds are looking to find a green future. For instance, did you know in the push towards "zero waste" the highest percentage of our garbage is FOOD?
I've also met a lot of great people who are also thinking about "green" -- including Brandi Clark of Austin EcoNetwork. Here is a link to her newsletter. http://www.austineconetwork.com/Sara Farrhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03976968947703258794noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5200154501703233967.post-79852261238635111492013-04-03T22:25:00.001-07:002013-04-03T22:25:57.615-07:00Ch-ch-ch-changes!Spring is bringing many renewing changes to the PIP. The Puppet Improv Project is stepping into the arena of scripted theater with "Trash", a musical. In our show, a neighborhood compost heap feeds off city's thoughtless waste and morphs into a monster trash heap. Only when city learns "Don't Feed The Heap" do they regain control of their city and can rescue its citizens.

The show marks a milestone in the company's development as it will be the first show we have produced using improv to create a scripted story. The use of a script opens up a whole new world of puppet technology. Using a script gives us the skeleton we need to design and build the custom puppets needed to create a world where objects have life beyond what we give them.

Here are some of the things I've been thinking about.
StanWinston School -- "Your ability to problem solve and experiment is the only limiting factor in what you can do and get away with... I really don't think that there is any tool that you'd find in a professional special effects shop that is better than a well developed ability to solve problems. And that's the most fun anyway." ~Peter Weir Clarke

Peter Weir Clarke is a maker of cool things. He is a congenital tinkerer and boot-strap engineer and is the builder and destroyer of his own home. He is an avid shaper and rider of his own experimental surfboards. He has made it his life's goal to be able to build just about anything and his creations are often accompanied by burns, shocks, flames, black smoke, bad smells, scabs, scars, bloody knuckles, fearful screams, enthusiastic shouts, maniacal laughter and fits of frustrated profanity. His work has been featured in blockbusters, b-movies, art galleries, museums and international expositions. He works as an animatronics and mechanical effects designer/fabricator and teaches drawing and sculpture at the Art Institute of California -- Hollywood.

Our 2012 spectacular "Off the Reef" has had a great opening weekend. We are full-steam ahead for our second weekend and final two performances this Friday and Saturday night. We've had some friends come and capture the show on film, and I wanted to share a bit of that with you. Check out the "Off The Reef" album on Steve Roger's Photography on Faecbook to see some cool images of our show.

It' is incredibly challenging to shoot in ultraviolet light, and these images turned out really well! Come see the show LIVE for the ultimate experience. Ticket sales are going on now at the link below.

We can do this because we work on that one show show for a year. TRASH is our 2013 show, so this year we are exploring the technology, developing characters and experimenting with the type of show we'd like it to grow into. We did this with "Off The Reef" last year, experimenting with black light puppetry, building a black light puppet arsenal set in the ocean, and then rehearsing it for 3 months.
"Trash" is in the early stages of development, but we are about to see the result of a years worth of work this November in "Off The Reef". It has made an extraordinary difference to focus our energy like this. I hope everyone will get to come see this show.
Our 2014 show (working title "Fae") will be in the High Fantasy genre, and using lots of new (to us) mechanical rigs. I'm working on funding for that research this year with the hope of actually doing the R&D next year, so that we can produce another AMAZING show in 2014.

Today I sent out the Press Release for our upcoming show, Off The Reef. Here is a link to a copy of it on our site.

We've also got our printed posters in and they look great! They should be going up around Austin soon. Here is a sneak peek.
Rehearsals are going strong. We have one more month of rehearsals. The show is starting to take shape. We are super excited about the role our puppet techs play in the show. It is looking pretty sweet! We're filming next weeks rehearsal to give the cast a chance to SEE what they are creating. I'll post some images when we get them.
In the meantime, we have a few puppets that didn't get built for the LAST version of this show that are coming together for this show. But I'll save that for the next blog post. :-)Sara Farrhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03976968947703258794noreply@blogger.com0
